Where is Fethiye Museum?

Fethiye Museum is at Kesikkapı Mahallesi, 505 Sokak No:4, in Fethiye’s Muğla province. Its town location makes it possible to combine a museum visit with other central sights; the affiliated Amyntas archaeological site is also in Kesikkapı.

The collection began taking shape in the early 1960s, when local authorities planned a place to display archaeological finds from the district. The museum’s present building opened in 1987, presenting the collected objects to visitors.

What can you see at Fethiye Museum?

Fethiye Museum’s two halls cover archaeology and ethnography, with almost all displayed objects collected in Fethiye and nearby areas, according to the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

The archaeology hall spans objects from the 3rd millennium BC to the end of the Byzantine period. Pottery makes up a large part of the collection. One standout is a stele inscribed in three languages; it contributed greatly to deciphering Lycian.

Another highlighted object is the “Girl with a Dove” statue, shown with two female statues. The group is linked to the Artemis cult and evidence for an ancient Artemis temple in the city.

The ethnography hall shifts focus to regional craft and dress. Look for handwoven textiles, embroidery, caftans, üçetek garments and silver jewellery, as well as a wooden dastar loom displayed with its working parts. Outside, the display includes large stone blocks, sarcophagi and the Izraza Monument.

Which historic sight can you pair with the museum?

The Amyntas archaeological site is a natural history-focused addition: its address is Kesikkapı, 117. Sokak, No:3, Fethiye. It consists of rock-cut tombs on a steep rocky slope within the city limits, including three tombs identified as temple-type examples.

Fethiye’s weekly market is a separate stop during a town visit. The museum and the tombs have different addresses, so confirm access details for both as you plan your visit.
