Dalyan can work as a day trip from Fethiye if you plan transport and leave time for both the town and Kaunos. By car, the journey is estimated at about an hour and a quarter; public transport involves a change in Ortaca.

Kaunos sits across the stream from Dalyan, making the archaeological site a natural addition to a day in town. The rock-cut tombs visible from Dalyan date to the 4th century BC and were also used during the Roman period.

Keep the return journey in mind, especially if you plan to visit the site. Hotel Doruk is a three-star hotel in Fethiye.

What can you do in Dalyan town and on the river?

Dalyan Stream runs between the town and Kaunos Archaeological Site, which stands on its right bank opposite Dalyan. The rock-cut tombs are visible from town, giving you a view of the ancient site across the water.

Make the riverside and town part of the same stop, then cross the stream to visit Kaunos. Confirm boat arrangements locally before building your plans around a river trip.

What should you see at Kaunos?

What should you see at Kaunos?

Kaunos brings together an ancient theatre, other archaeological remains and an acropolis on a hill. The site is within Çandır Village in Köyceğiz district, on the right bank of Dalyan Stream.

Kaunos was once an important commercial port; as the sea filled with alluvium, it lost its port character. The acropolis hill rises 152 metres. At its foot is an ancient theatre, while the site also contains remains of a basilica, a Roman bath and a temple.

The tombs visible from Dalyan were cut into the rock in the 4th century BC and remained in use during the Roman period. At Kaunos, you can see the theatre and other remains within the archaeological site.

What should you confirm before the return trip?

Kaunos opening hours vary by listing and season: the Turkish Museums schedule gives 08:30–19:30 from 1 April to 1 November and 08:30–17:30 from 1 November to 1 April, while the Ministry listing gives 08:30–18:30 daily. The ticket office closing time also differs between listings. Check the Ministry’s official site before you go, especially if you plan a late visit.

Admission is €3.00 for non-Turkish visitors aged 8 and above and 200.00 TL for Turkish adult visitors aged 8 and above. Children aged 0–8 who are not Turkish citizens and children aged 0–18 who are Turkish citizens enter free. MüzeKart is valid for Turkish citizens; Museum Pass The Aegean does not cover Kaunos, so a separate ticket is required.

Kaunos is at Çandır Mahallesi, Köyceğiz, Muğla; the telephone number is +90 252 614 1150. If you are taking the bus back, allow for the change at Ortaca and remember that planned departure times may change.
